Worzel Gummidge, the beloved scarecrow who swapped "heads" depending on the challenge, gives us a wonderfully playful metaphor for understanding personality energy at work.

In the workplace, we're constantly shifting between different approaches, motivations and behaviours. Just like Worzel chose the head that helped him solve the problem in front of him, we naturally lean into different energies depending on the task, environment, and pressure we are under.  I utilise the Insights Discovery model to explains this.  It has four colour energies: Fiery Red, Sunshine Yellow, Earth Green and Cool Blue.

Fiery Red: represents action, results, focus and decision in the moments where we need to get things done quickly and clearly.

Sunshine Yellow:  for expressive, social and creative ideas, they love to socialise

Earth Green: brings calmness, empathy and stability a little like the glue that holds things together.

Cool Blue:  uses logic, accuracy and analysis, detailed in their workings which ensures work is thorough and correct.

Most people have a preference for one or two of these, but we all use all four. The magic lies in knowing which one to draw on, and when.

High performing teams need the full mix.

  • A team made only of Fiery Reds might move quickly but miss details.

  • A team full of Cool Blues might analyse beautifully but get stuck in indecision.

  • A Sunshine Yellow-dominant group will generate ideas but need grounding.

  • An Earth Green-heavy team will support each other deeply but may avoid conflict.

Worzel reminds us that flexibility is a strength. The more consciously we can choose the "head" we wear, the more effective we become as individuals and within our wider teams.
