Did I ever bring my whole self to work?
For years I believe I did, but looking back now, I see something different.
I wasn't hiding exactly, I was adapting. Shaping myself to fit the role, the environment, and the expectations placed on me.
And that question: "Did I really bring my whole self to work?"....has stayed with me.
Who I Was Then
Relating this to Insights Discovery, for the last two years in employment, I have sat in wheel position 55. My strongest colour energies were Cool Blue, Fiery Red, and Earth Green, with very little Sunshine Yellow showing up.
On paper, it made perfect sense.
My dual role in Learning & Development alongside Records & Data Management leaned heavily into Cool Blue thinking: analysis, systems, structure, accuracy. When I delivered training, I consciously dialled up my Sunshine Yellow to the point that people often assumed it was my dominant colour. Fiery Red showed up in achieving results and driving outcomes, while Earth Green supported others to reach those 'a‑ha' moments.
It worked. But it wasn't effortless.
I was flexing, sometimes comfortably, sometimes not.
Then and Now: A shift in my wheel
So what changed?
In the last year, lots changed for me both personally and professionally.
My Earth Green dropped significantly (59% to 34%), surprising at first glance. Whilst my Sunshine Yellow rose sharply (14% to 39%). My core remains Cool Blue and Fiery Red dominant, but the way those energies now express themselves looks very different.
Because I'm no longer developing people within someone else's organisation.
I'm doing it as me...
As a business owner
As a freelancer
As someone fully accountable for showing up
From Corporate Data to Human Connection
There's been a natural reduction in Cool Blue energy (98% to 86%) and Earth Green (59% to 34%). In the corporate world, I lived deep in data, systems administration, implementation, and reporting world which needed constant analytical attention and structure, often blended with Fiery Red for measurable results.
The data I work with now still matters, this time it's different.
- Social media reach
- Return on investment from learning programmes
- Feedback and behavioural shifts
Less rigid. More human.
And let's talk about Sunshine Yellow.
The energy I once avoided
There was a time when networking filled me with dread.
I was the person at the back of the room, silently hoping no one would approach me, with my my mind racing at the thought of introducing myself, saying something "interesting" and explaining why I was there and what I wanted to achieve fro being there.
Now? That tension has disappeared.
It's been replaced with clarity:
"This is my business. This is who I help, support, lead, and facilitate."
I no longer feel like I'm a performing Sunshine Yellow. I'm comfortable being there.
Before, I was stepping outside my comfort zone because the role required it. Now, I step into it because it reflects who I am and because owning a business demands visibility.
You can't hide when it's your name on the work.
Adaptation, Resilience and being more you
This shift reflects something deeper.
We adapt constantly to situations, life events, environments, and expectations. Some changes happen quickly. Others unfold slowly and the movement in our wheel positions tells that story.
For me, contributing factors included:
- Changes in my personal life and relationships
- Changes in relatives health
- A shift from employment to self employment
- A change of environment
I'm less judgemental, more accepting and much better at placing boundaries when vulnerable. Less driven by people pleasing and more grounded in self trust and that, more than any percentage change, is what transformation looks like!
Individuation isn't about Age
Carl Jung believed individuation often emerges in the second half of life. I believe it can happen at any age. Whenever we choose authenticity. Whenever we stay present. Whenever we build a life and business that are sustainable, meaningful, and aligned.
That's where peace comes from.
We are NEVER just one colour
We are not one preference.
We are not one label.
We are not one fixed way of being.
We are a brilliant mix of all energies, shaped by context, choice, and change.
Insights doesn't box people in. It reveals. It reconnects. It transforms and sometimes, it reminds us that the person we are becoming was always there, waiting to be fully expressed.
